Changing the name of a folder to "Originals" prevents the contents being displayed in Explorer
Just thought I'd post this here, luckily this bug has an easy workaround, but I thought I should raise it somewhere so maybe someone at MS can decide if it needs to be looked into (if anyone at MS ever sees this). I've made a short Youtube video which shows the bug very clearly, and it seems like quite a bad bug, even though it has a simple workaround. Basically the problem is that I have a folder on my computer named "Originals" which contains lots of photos. However, Explorer tells me the folder is empty. It turns out that renaming the folder to anything except "Originals" makes all the photos appear. Changing the name back to "Originals" makes them disappear again - Explorer says the folder is empty, even though it isn't. Here's the video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VygVUZTnpPc I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium.

Ouch! That's a nasty bug! Are you interested in trying to work a little differently, so as to avoid this problem? Just for fun, try moving or copying your folders to a real hard drive folder, rather than using the Photos Library. For example, make a folder called C:\Photos and put the Originals folder in there. I'm guessing you won't see the problem. Generally speaking I have come to avoid using Libraries ENTIRELY because one simply runs across a number of weird problems with using them. They were tacked onto Explorer not long ago and while they might seem like a good idea to help with organization, if you can't trust what you're seeing the system is useless. Working in real hard drive folders always seems to yield more deterministic results. It's good you have identified a reproducible problem. Microsoft might - or might not - ultimately fix it. For now it seems prudent to try to work in ways that avoid it. -Noel Detailed how-to in my new eBook: Configure The Windows 7 "To Work" Options

Something I noticed on your video... When you open the Originals folder, it's set to Arrange By Day (this shows in the upper-right). When you rename it, it's set to Arrange by Folder. This implies something in Windows' automatic folder type determination may have gone wrong... Try this: When it's named Originals, right-click it, and choose Properties, then click the Customize tab. What happens when you change it to a General Items folder (first selector)? -Noel Detailed how-to in my new eBook: Configure The Windows 7 "To Work" Options

Thanks for the suggestions, I will try both of those.

Thanks Noel, your first suggestion was absolutely correct. The folder in question is a "real" folder, its location is under C:\Users\Dan\Pictures. If I navigate to its "real" location, without using the "Libraries" shortcut in explorer, the contents show up fine. But if I navigate to it using the Pictures Library shortcut, the contents don't show up and Explorer claims the folder is empty. I've also noticed that if I navigate to the folder using the Libraries shortcut, and then right click it, the "Customize" tab doesn't show up, though it does show up if I navigate to it using the "real" path. I'm not sure how this problem started initially, it's weird that it doesn't work with one particular folder name but works with others.
